EMERGING ART FOUNDATION

Advisor : Darin Johnstone

In Collaboration with : Aswin Wijaya

The Emerging Art Foundation is a center for contemporary art that offers young artists a chance to debut, and incorporate their work into its collection. At once a creative space for artists and a place where art and general public can meet, the Emerging Art Foundation is dedicated to promoting and raising public awareness of contemporary art.

It is therefore given that the gallery is the most important space of the entire given programs from the brief and as such, the gallery occupies the middle core of the project where the heart of the project is. The gallery mass would serve as the main structural component of the project and also a tool for organizing the circulatory system within the gallery and outside the gallery.

Programs given from the brief are reorganized and grouped into three main categories – apart from the gallery space – namely the headquarter, media space and services that occupies the interstitial space between the gallery and the enclosing mass.  Services are hidden from the public eye in the basement while the media space is in the mid level to attract the public into the project. As for the headquarter which is comprised of administrative offices would be located in the upper most level restricted from public access.

The exterior aperture is a double skin system – a layer of glass supported by mullions in the interior and an exterior layer of perforated metal panel. Size of aperture varies by the program adjacent. The media space would have larger aperture for a more welcoming environment while the headquarter would have smaller aperture size to shade off unwanted sunlight in the offices.
